The success of organic agriculture depends on who adopts it and why.

The article discusses a case study on organic agriculture in the South Indian state of Kerala. The study aimed to understand why farmers in this area choose to adopt organic farming practices and how it affects their livelihoods. The study found that farmers, grouped in wealthy “hobby farmers”, poorer “non-certified farmers”, and middle class “export farmers”, had different motivations for adopting organic agriculture and different levels of satisfaction with it as a livelihood strategy. The study suggests that in order to better support organic agriculture, it's important to have a nuanced understanding of the farmers involved and to tailor policy support to their specific needs and concerns.
