Guest lecture - Dr. Christian Levers [18.04.24]
Dr. Christian Levers will visit the University of Hohenheim and give a guest lecture on: "Patterns, Drivers, and Impacts of Land-system Change: Overview of past, Present, and Future Research"
Dr. Christian Levers is a research group leader and coordinator of the topic are 'Biodiversity' at the Thünen Institute of Biodiversity (Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute). His research interests lie in identifying pathways toward sustainable human-environment systems in light of global change. He specialises in spatially explicit, quantitative, and large-scale land-system assessments to better understand patterns, determinants, and consequences of land-system dynamics. His regional focus is on Europe and South America.
The presentation will provide an overview about Dr. Christian Lever’s past and current research focussing on mapping and modelling drivers and outcomes of land system dynamics, mainly in Europe and South America. The presentation will address the questions of 1) where and how (fast) do land systems change (using examples from Europe and the Gran Chaco in South America), 2) which factors are responsible for these patterns and changes (using the example of abandonment in Europe), and 3) what are socio-environmental impacts and trade-offs of land-system dynamics (using examples of land-use legacy effects on bird diversity patterns in Germany and future land-system change impacts on biodiversity, carbon stocks, and marginalized communities in the Chaco). Lastly, he will touch upon current work on mapping global food system challenges and conceptualising and mapping polarisation trends in Europe's land systems, as well as outlining envisaged research on coupling land-system and biodiversity modelling.
