Another Fieldwork Update from the Agroecology4Climate Project [26.08.25]
PhD researcher Julia Fritzsche has completed the first phase of her fieldwork, exploring agroecological practices and movements with a particular focus on agroforestry in Brandenburg, Germany.Between March and August, Julia visited more than 50 farms and farming projects implementing agroforestry practices across Brandenburg. She also engaged with several organizations working in the fields of agroecology and agroforestry.
With the valuable support of practice partner Julia Bar-Tal, a diverse range of farms opened their doors to share both their practices and their involvement in wider networks. The fieldwork was further supported by intern Perrine Reynès and supervisor Maria Kernecker.
On the farms, Julia conducted walking interviews guided by semi-structured questions, allowing farmers to not only describe but also demonstrate their experiences. The farms represented a broad spectrum—from small-scale vegetable farms to large-scale crop production systems, with and without livestock. Agroforestry practices ranged from community-led syntropic forest gardens to poplar alley cropping on extensive grasslands and crop fields.
While analysis is ongoing, Julia is already preparing to revisit some of the farms this autumn to collect biophysical data on soil and above-ground carbon.
