CGIAR Gender Conference in Cape Town, South Africa  [03.11.25]

Read Kelzy's reflection

Earlier this month, Kelzy, a PhD researcher in our department and a member of the Bright Spots of Sustainable Agriculture project, had the opportunity to attend and present her work at the CGIAR Gender Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference, themed “Accelerating Equality in Food, Land, and Water Systems,” brought together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to address gender disparities as we approach the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As part of the panel on “Gender in Policy, Governance & Knowledge Systems,” Kelzy discussed the importance of integrating gendered perspectives to build more sustainable and equitable agri-food systems in Mexico. Her presentation highlighted:

  • The solutions-oriented approach of the Bright Spots project
  • Her research identifying women’s organizations driving positive change in Mexican agri-food systems
  • The importance (and challenge) of developing alternative indicators based on diverse knowledge systems and values

Well done, Kelzy, on representing our department and advancing this important work!

Reflection from Kelzy:

"I’m thankful for the opportunity to present my work on ‘Co-creating gendered pathways for food system transformation in Mexico.’ In such a time when the world is facing multiple uncertainties, the conference was an important space to critically reflect and engage in much-needed conversations about gender and equity in our systems.

I had the chance to connect with researchers and practitioners working on similar issues, finding alignment and deepening my understanding of gender-related topics. From discussions on shifting gender and social norms to strengthening the voice and influence of socially excluded groups, these conversations highlighted the need for coordinated action and, importantly, reflexivity in how we approach this work.

Overall, I left grateful for the new connections made and inspired to integrate gender-transformative approaches more intentionally in my research for more equitable and sustainable agri-food systems."
