Research Exchange on Tidal Flood Vulnerability in Kerala, India [22.06.26]
During a recent visit to Hohenheim, PhD researcher Anandu Premachandran from Kerala Agricultural University shared insights from his research on farming communities affected by tidal flooding in Kerala, India
Recently, the Department of Sustainable Use of Natural Resources welcomed Anandu Premachandran, a PhD researcher from Kerala Agricultural University, for a short research visit. The visit was linked to the SPARC (Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaborations) Project Phase III, which focuses on assessing vulnerability to flood and drought hazards using machine learning. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and involves collaboration between institutions in India and Germany.
During his visit, Anandu presented findings from his research on 'Tidal flood vulnerability assessment of farming communities in Kerala, India'. Conducted under the guidance of Dr. Archana R. Sathyan, the research draws on field observations from tidal flood-affected regions and examines the challenges faced by farming households as well as the factors that influence vulnerability and resilience in these landscapes.
His presentation explored traditional and contemporary farming practices in the study region, highlighted key indicators of tidal flood vulnerability, and reflected on policy measures that could support communities facing increasing environmental pressures.
The visit provided an opportunity for discussion and exchange on topics related to climate vulnerability, disaster management, livelihoods, agricultural adaptation and resilience, while also strengthening connections between researchers working in different geographical and institutional contexts.
We thank Anandu for visiting the department and sharing his research and experiences with our research community.
