Cem Özdemir at the University of Hohenheim  [31.10.22]

The global energy crisis, food insecurity, and sustainable food consumption: The German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, visited the University of Hohenheim to discuss emerging topics and to learn about the university’s major research areas.

Prof. Dr. Verena Seufert, together with Prof. Dr. Iris Lewandowski, Prof. Dr. Christine Wieck, und Prof. Dr. Ramona Weinrich, gave a presentation about bioeconomy as a way toward sustainable and resilient food systems.

Verena Seufert highlighted the need for transdisciplinary and systemic research approaches to achieve solutions for sustainable agriculture, which are the cornerstone of research at the department ‘Sustainable Use of Natural Resource’. As an example for a complex system approach, she cited a study on organic crop cultivation, which showed that organic agriculture performs better than conventional agriculture in terms of environmental indicators per unit area but also has potential costs including lower yields and higher consumer prices. How complexity can be embraced to find sustainable agricultural solutions will be demonstrated in the flagship project ‘Bright Spots of Sustainable Agriculture’.
